Will negative voting be allowed in Electronic Polling Machine

The parliamentary elections are round the corner, however a question that is being asked is whether voters can exercise negative voting?

The Supreme Court will soon decide on the matter on Thursday. Earlier, the apex court had reserved orders on this issue.

So far:

Petitioner: Allow negative voting button on voting machines

Poll panel: Sent proposal four years ago

Centre: Tough to educate voters

Voters can currently choose not to vote by signing form

The court is hearing a petition by the PUCL which has asked for an additional button in electronic voting machines so that voters can have the option of not choosing any of the candidates in the fray.

The election commission said it supports negative voting and had written to the government four years ago.

But arguing against it, the Centre said the constitution review committee had rejected the proposal as it is tough to educate voters.

The law already provides for an option in which the voter can sign a form to register a non-vote but in India it has no real impact.
